Two pairs of friends of mine are having babies soon, so I figured I'd make plushies for their newborns! We just replaced our old couches and the old ones were really not suitable for use by anyone, anymore, so they were due for the dump. The fabric of the cushions was still in good shape, though, and the filling of the cushions was perfect for a plushie, too. Still, it took a lot of effort to make this—the second plushie will have shorter and thicker tentacles.
The outer layer sewed together. Notches didn't work for me, after a while I figured out horizontal stripes with tailor's chalk worked best.

I read it's best to avoid loose parts like the buttons for the eyes, if you're making something for babies. So I embroidered a face, instead.

I wanted to create a different texture for each tentacle bottom, to have something interesting for the baby's developing hands.

Filling the plushie up was quite an effort... In fact, turning it right side out was quite hard, already. Reason to make the second one with thicker and shorter tentacles. I added some white loops to the head, as I found babies like to have something to to hold with their little hands.

I had to reinforce the belly, as that was hard for me to sew and came apart a bit. The second version, I will really have to hem all the pieces, too. I did hem the different fabrics making up the tentacle bottoms, but the main body parts were un-hemmed. I used some sashiko on the added piece of fabric to spice it up a bit.
